Bright, foamy shaken espresso with a dark cocoa and brown sugar syrup, a lift of fresh orange, and cool, nutty almond milk underneath.

Shaken Almond Mocha Espresso with Orange

Ingredients

  • 4 shots120 gEspressofreshly brewed
  • 1¼ cups (300 ml)300 gAlmond milk, unsweetenedcold
  • 2½ tbsp40 gWater
  • 1½ tbsp packed22 gBrown sugar
  • 2 tbsp12 gUnsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml)30 gOrange juice
  • ½ tsp2 gVanilla extract
  • a pinch0.3 gSalt

Steps

  1. Brew the espresso and set it aside.
  2. Make the cocoa syrup: in a small pot, whisk together the water, brown sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder and salt over medium heat until smooth and just simmering, about 2 minutes.
  3. Take the pot off the heat and stir in the vanilla and the espresso; let the mocha mixture cool for about 5 minutes so it doesn't melt all the ice at once.
  4. Pour the mocha mixture into a cocktail shaker or large jar, add the orange juice and a handful of ice, seal and shake hard for 20 seconds until frothy.
  5. Fill two glasses with ice and pour half of the almond milk into each glass.
  6. Strain half of the shaken mocha espresso over the almond milk in each glass, spooning the foam on top, and serve right away.
