Steps
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan with a little of the butter and line it with a parchment sling.
- In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda and salt.
- In a large bowl, whisk the melted butter, brown sugar and molasses until glossy. Whisk in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the grated fresh ginger.
- Add half of the flour mixture to the molasses mixture and stir just until combined. Stir in the buttermilk, then fold in the remaining half of the flour mixture until no dry streaks remain.
- Scrape the batter into the pan and smooth the top. Bake 55 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cake in the pan on a rack for 15 minutes, then lift it out with the parchment and cool completely on the rack, about 1 hour.
- Whisk the powdered sugar and lemon juice into a thick glaze. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cake and let it set 10 minutes before cutting into 12 slices.
